
The goal of the conference was to determine areas of need in the management of cancer in Nigeria and the African continent. Federal and State Teaching Hospitals were well represented. The event was declared open by the honorable Minister for Health, Prof. Lambo.

We covered 14 of 21 local government areas (LGA) of Imo state. Africa Cancer Care Inc and its affiliate (Africa Cancer Prevention Group) operated out of the Imo State Teaching Hospital. We were assisted by staff, medical and nursing students from the hospital.

In Niger State, our base was the Minna general hospital and IBB hospital. In Minna, we educated thousands through life television cancer awareness forum and public speaking. We screened 254 and found 97 cancer cases predominantly breast and cervical cancers.
Incidental findings were thyromegaly due to iodine deficiency. 70-75% of those screened had enlarged goitre.

We educated residents of the community in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center and Y-Me. Turn out here was initially slow. We went knocking on doors, gave out flyers on various cancers and talked to them about cancer prevention, the importance of screening, and early detection.

We reached thousands through public speaking in town halls, churches, communitiy hospitals, life radio programs and offered didactic lectures to the medical personnel at the University of Nigeria Nsukka. Read the rest of this entry »
